Seated Buddha in Royal Attire
Material: Wood
Origin: Myanmar
Height: 31 cm
Code: TS-016
This form of Buddha statue is commonly found in Myanmar, especially the Shan State. Its origin can be traced back to the 6th century at Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and Thailand, but became more prevalent in the 13th century and onwards. Such are still visible in Wat Angkor of Cambodia, and northern Thailand, in particular the Lu Tribe, commonly known as “Pra Song Kruang” meaning “the decorated Buddha”.
Here, the images of Lord Buddha wear crown, are dressed in royal attire with decorative jewels embellishment, flanges, royal regalia and so on. Although most often the Buddha image is presented in a human form without ornaments, in simple robes, such crowned and be-jewelled buddha images are represented as the Sambhogakaya form of the Buddha. It also depicts the proclaiming of Buddha’s sovereignty.
